Dental Restoration

Silver amalgam fillings are still in use today as they are the most economical choice for many patients. These fillings are not particularly pleasing to the eye, and we know that by unavoidable design, silver/mercury fillings ultimately result in a weaker tooth structure. Porcelain inlays and Tooth Colored Restorations (onlays) create fillings that are not only beautiful (or unnoticeable) but also add strength to weakened teeth. These restorations are esthetically pleasing and very strong thanks to new bonding technologies.

Disadvantages of Silver fillings:

Silver fillings have many drawbacks. The edges of the silver filling can wear down, become weak or break. This results in the tooth not being protected and lets cavities get started once again. With age, the metal of a silver filling expands, contracts, and can split.

Silver fillings contain 50 percent mercury. They can corrode, leak and cause stains on your teeth and gums.

Fortunately, silver fillings can safely be replaced with Tooth-Colored Restorations.

Advantages of Tooth-Colored Restorations

There are many advantages to tooth-colored restorations. Resin onlays are bonded to the teeth creating a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth. Such restorations can be used in instances where much of the tooth structure has been lost. The tooth remains intact and stronger.

Since the resin used in tooth-colored restorations contain fluoride this can help prevent decay. The resin wears like natural teeth and does not require placement at the gum line, which is healthier for your gums!

The result is a beautiful smile!

Replacing Silver Fillings with a Tooth Colored Restoration

You can have your silver fillings replaced with tooth-colored restorations (onlays). This process requires two appointments.

Your First Appointment:

  1. The old filling is removed along with any additional decay.
  2. An impression is made of your teeth. A model of your teeth is made and sent to the lab.
  3. A temporary onlay is placed on the tooth.

At the Lab: A resin is carefully placed into the model of your teeth. It is then designed to look natural.

Your Second Appointment:

  1. The temporary onlay is removed.
  2. A conditioning gel is placed on your tooth to prepare it for the new onlay.
  3. Bonding cement is placed on the tooth and a high intensity light bonds the resin to the tooth.
  4. The tooth is then polished.

Your teeth are restored to a natural look and feel, they are stronger and the tooth is protected!

This is an example of a composite restoration.  These are ideal for smaller restorations:

These amalgam restorations are no longer doing their job of protecting the inside of the tooth from bacteria and infection because the edges are starting to wear out.  These “fillings” did a great job of protecting the tooth and restoring function for many years, but at this point require replacement.

After restoration with a composite material, the teeth look great and idea form and function have been restored.

Larger restorations, or fillings, may benefit from a lab made restoration such as a crown or onlay seen here:

Patient Review By Kathy Aubuchon A

Had a great first experience with getting my teeth fixed. Nicholas Jr worked on my teeth. He did a fantastic job and I love his caring attitude towards his patients. I had to see his father (he was on vacation) he was also fantastic and would highly recommend his office if you are seeking a current or new dentist. I'm very picky about my dentist so to find someone I am comfortable with is so important. The office is pristine.

Patient Review By Jay Bazzinotti

I am probably Nick DiNinno's longest patient. I have been visiting his practice since September, 1980. That, by itself, is a powerful testimony to the high esteem in which I hold this practice.I have watched if grow from a tiny walk-up in downtown Fitchburg to a full-service, extensive family practice offering the best care and treatment from fine people who treat me like family. I now live just outside Boston and make the trip to Fitchburg twice a year to see the friendly staff and shake Nick's hand and, by the way get excellent service and treatment. The people who work here are first rate and friendly and nice as well. It seems strange to say this but even after all these years I still look forward to a trip to the dentist. How many people can say that?

Patient Review By Lisa S

My daughter had her first filling here while being completely awake, after numerous attempts at other "pediatric" specialist. She had such high anxiety about needing a filling. Dr. Nicholas was able to ease her fear after our first consultation. We went into her appointment today where she was able to benefit from "laughing gas"and with out a struggle or tear shed she was able to get her filling! No stress for her or me!! The entire staff here is wonderful and I can not thank them enough!

You will be relieved and gratified upon engaging with this team of professionals who clearly demonstrate an outstanding commitment to patient care and comfort. From the office manager to the accounts manager to the hygienist to the dentist - all work seamlessly together to provide your peace of mind. Additionally, the facility is bright, clean and comfortable, the oral care equipment is state-of-the-art, the comprehensive and modern dental methods are at the highest level of development. You may even find yourself relaxing while the novocaine kicks in, as Bob Marley's soothing vocals resonate via Pandora to reassure you, "This is my message to you-ou-ou: Don't worry 'bout a thing, 'Cause every little thing gonna be all right." Words of wisdom accurately reflecting what you want to know while receiving care that is crucial to your quality of life.

We have been patients of DiNinno Family Dental practice about 30 years. Dr. Nick has a great "chair-side" manner and is always concerned with patient comfort while he provides the best dental care. I can't say enough about the whole team there; they are all just great! I am almost looking forward to my next visit.
